Great Dane Lover Information
Great Danes are easily recognizable for their tall, pointed ears, and large, muscular bodies.
However, these dogs are often unaware of their size and can sometimes behave more like miniature lap dogs, as demonstrated by two famous Great Danes, the cartoon characters Marmaduke and Scooby Doo. Great Danes are not large, they are giants.
Standard Poodles are large and they are half the size of a Dane.Great Danes are muscular, with a lean build and smooth appearance. The ears on their long, rectangular heads are often cropped into tall points. Great Danes are not a healthy breed. Their bone structure is often flimsy and may break down under the heavy weight thrust upon it. Like many giant breeds they can suffer from joint disease and growth problems, bloat, bone tumors and especially heart disease. Bloating can be prevented by placing the food dish on an elevated platform, spacing meals throughout the day, and avoiding exercise immediately after meals.
Great Danes are one of the tallest dog breeds in the world! Don’t let their size fool you though; most Great Danes are extremely gentle, which is why they are often referred to as ‘gentle giants’. Great Danes are easygoing, intelligent and trainable. They are sensitive to training, however, and should be treated with positive actions. Great Danes are low maintenance pets, easy to care for coats do well if their nails are trimmed regularly. They love to go for walks and run around the yard.
Great Danes are incredibly striking dogs but over the years have been bred to extreme proportions. Great Danes are quiet and clean, and they thrive on spending time with their owners. While some can do well in apartments, their sheer size makes them more suitable to a home with more room. Great Danes are a beautiful breed of dog and are very social and lovable.
Great Danes, like most giant dogs, have a fairly slow metabolism. This results in less energy and less food consumption per pound of dog than in small breeds. Great Danes were first placed in the “foreign class” at dog shows in England. But people began to fall in love with this larger dog and the Great Dane Club was formed. Great Danes can come in fawn, brindle, black, blue, harlequin (white with black patches), mantle and merle.
